I first fell in love with Mike Oldfield’s music way back in 1973 when he released Tubular Bells. Always inovitave and experimental, this amazing virtuoso musician would allways take you on a rollercoaster ride with his music. His albums varied greatly in their content. Enchanting flashes of musical and melodic brilliance would catch you unawares. You always looked forward to these moments of ecstatic brilliance.
The Songs of Distant Earth along with Tubular Bells 2 (what Tubular Bells Should have been) stand out among my favorites. Take a listen to the preview above and BUY this cd. A wonderful blend of laid back sounds with evocotive and visionary themes. He manages to weave a tapestery of original music taking in many styles and it’s one of the few releases by Mike where he uses samples of American Indian and Chanting Monks among others. It all hangs together so well. The inspiration for this cd was a book by Arthur C Clarke of the same name, he was quoted as saying it complimented his work well. Wish they had made a film of it. My castaway cd choice would be The Songs of Distant Earth. An essential work for anyone who likes visionary instrumental and new age music. 5 stars.

Tubular Bells 11 is re – arrangement of the original Mike Re-wrote the parts and came up with an album that too my mind stands extreemly well alone. I actually prefer it to the original. It has more instruments and of course the production and recording is light years ahead of the eight track it was originally done on. Check out the video extract above where Mike performs it live with a whole raft of musicians. Fantastic! Together with The Songs of Distant Earth and Ommadawn I would say this was some of his best work. Hugely enjoyable and a must buy.
